What You Should Know About Owning Multiple Cars

Having multiple cars in a single household is more common than you may think. Especially in our modern world it’s become almost essential for families to have multiple cars, and owning multiple cars comes with some interesting positives and negatives. In this article we’ll let you know all you need to know about multiple car ownership.

Expenses

Owning 2 cars is more expensive than owning 1 car. While that’s probably not the most shocking news it’s still worth breaking down what the extra challenges of 2 cars is. Obviously the biggest cost of owning multiple cars is buying multiple cars. And most other associated costs will be doubled too like insurance, and taxes.

However a couple places where you won’t see a significant increase are in fuel costs and maintenance, as instead of being doubled, these costs are going to be split between the cars instead.

If money is a large concern, but 2 or more vehicles is a necessity, then you may find much more luck shopping for 2 used cars instead of 2 new ones.

Convenience

This is probably the biggest advantage of owning multiple cars, because multiple cars gives you multiple options. If you have multiple drivers in the house like spouses or children then having more than one car is practically an essential requirement for people to be able to do what they need to do.

If one car is having issues, it won’t start or it’s just misbehaving then having another car available means you’re not instantly screwed and can still make it to work on time. And if you need to sell a car you don’t have to be quite so worried and stressed about finding the next one asap as you have other cars to fall back on.

Storage

An obvious concern when it comes to owning multiple cars is where exactly you’re going to put them. This is going to greatly depend on where you live. If you live in a house with a large garage and driveway then you’re already in a situation designed for multiple cars. If you live in an apartment with only one assigned parking space then owning multiple cars is going to be very impractical.

This may be a time when considering the actual size of the car before you buy it might be important, to make sure that the cars can fit into a garage or driveway at the same time. There’s nothing worse than driving a new car home just to realise it doesn’t actually fit anywhere.
